Our company offers a wide range of materials and accessories for polyester or epoxy mould making. Modern moulds are now produced from glass fibre reinforced plastics, which are divided into two types: positive and negative moulds.

The craft of mold making with epoxy resin or mold making with polyester resin requires a delicate touch, but is not overly complicated. Start by applying a GKF fabric fiber to the pattern component and laminating it with a synthetic resin after applying a release agent. For best results, the material and room temperature should be around 20°C. A dust-free environment and extraction are also beneficial. A mold should be constructed under optimal conditions, i.e., the material and room temperature should be approximately 20°C. A dust-free environment and possibly an extraction system should be available.


Making a mold—it's that easy!

Producing a mold requires some manual skill, but it is by no means difficult.


The importance of the master model: The master model serves as a template for impressions of negative or positive molds. It is important that the model has a smooth, dimensionally stable, and solvent-resistant surface that is not absorbent. It is equally important that the model shrinks in all dimensions to facilitate the direction of demolding.

Laminating refers to the combination of polyester resin and glass fiber mat or epoxy resin with glass filament fabric. The resulting material consisting of different layers is called laminate. Regardless of whether reinforcement fibers made of glass, carbon, or aramid are used, or what type of resin system is used, the basic principle remains the same.

Creating a mold - Correct number of layers

For a smaller mold, between 4 and 6 layers are usually sufficient. However, the number of layers required depends on the requirements for the finished mold. It is important to laminate the mold thicker than the finished part to ensure that drying of the finished part does not cause deformation of the mold due to shrinkage.

The last layer should be impregnated with only a small amount of resin and have a matte surface after drying. If the surface appears too shiny, too much resin has been applied. This can be counteracted with a tear-off cloth. After removing the tear-off cloth, the component is completely dust-free and clean. It leaves behind an even, rough surface structure that serves as an ideal substrate for further laminating, sealing, or bonding. This eliminates the tedious task of sanding and removing sanding dust.

A recommended curing time of at least 24 hours at 25°C is required. The use of plastic or wooden wedges makes it easier to remove the mold from the original mold. After demolding, it is recommended to trim the mold and, if necessary, polish it to a high gloss. It is advisable to use silicone-free polishing agents. Mold building gel coat can be used to repair minor surface defects. A strip of adhesive tape can help to smooth the surface.
