Hybrid fabrics
The term “hybrid” refers to a fabric that incorporates more than one type of structural fiber in its construction. It is possible to combine a wide variety of fabric types. Most fiber blends include a metallic component. Materials in various combinations, such as glass and metal or plastic and metal, are thus bonded together. Hybrids are most commonly found in 0/90° fabrics but are also sewn in 0/90° configurations. The most common hybrid combinations are carbon/aramid.
Advantages of using carbon and aramid as hybrid fabrics:
Carbon
- Highest strength (high modulus) and stiffness of all reinforcing fibers.
- High stiffness-to-weight ratio.
- Used for high-performance applications
Aramid
- High tensile strength-to-weight ratio.
- High strength and modulus of elasticity.
These positive properties of the individual fabrics are combined in hybrid fabrics. Materials in a wide variety of combinations, such as glass and metal or plastic and metal, are thus bonded together. This results in a significant improvement in the fabric’s properties during the process, such as weight reduction, flexibility, or strength.
Hybrid fabrics for the manufacture of high-strength components in model making, sports equipment manufacturing, boat and shipbuilding, as well as visible parts.
