Synthetic resin and aquarium

Would you like to design your own background or landscapes for your aquarium?

With epoxy resin, you can seal your objects made of wood, polystyrene, metal, filler, or plastic to make them waterproof. It can also be used to bond glass panes. Once cured, epoxy resin does not release any chemical substances and does not harm the animals or contaminate the water.

Epoxy resins can also be colored with our color pastes or cured to a crystal-clear finish. The surface becomes smooth and completely hard.

Our recommendation

Our Epox4307 epoxy resin with Hardener313 is a universal system for coatings, adhesives, and fillers, and is also ideal for impregnating glass, aramid, and carbon fibers. It has very good adhesion to wood, metal, concrete, polystyrene, and GRP. This epoxy resin has low viscosity and is free of solvents and fillers. It is characterized by good impregnation properties and very good chemical resistance. Another advantage of our Epox4305/Hardener313 epoxy resin is its good light resistance and it cures tack-free and clear. This resin-hardener combination is very low in yellowing and chalking.

Preparation

The substrate must be dry, clean, and free of grease! We therefore recommend sanding the surface and degreasing it with acetone.

Always allow parts treated with acetone to air dry for 2-3 hours.

For epoxy resins, the processing temperature should be between 20-30°C, not below

10°C. The relative humidity should not exceed 70%.

We recommend that you carry out tests in advance to ensure suitability for your project! Only mix small quantities of resin so as not to exceed the processing time.

For Epox 4307 epoxy resin with hardener 313, the processing time (at 20°C) is approx. 40 minutes. Before you immerse your component in water, it must be completely cured. Only then is it non-toxic. With Epox 4305 epoxy resin and hardener 313, the curing time (at 20°C) is approx. 24–36 hours. To further improve the properties, you can heat treat your component (annealing: 1 hour at room temperature, then 5 hours at 50°C and then another 5 hours at 70°C). It is essential to check the temperature resistance of your base material.

Processing

The mixing ratio (100 parts resin / 50 parts hardener) must be strictly adhered to and can only be achieved by weighing accurately.

When mixing, you will only achieve a homogeneous, bubble-free mass by decanting (slowly pouring into a second cup) and stirring intensively but slowly and gently (important: scrape off the edge of the mixing cup).

You can apply epoxy resin with a brush or a laminating roller.

If you want to apply several layers, you should work wet on sticky to avoid sanding after curing. Spraying is also possible. Note the processing time of approx. 40 minutes. The component must now cure for 24-36 hours before it can be used.
