What is the difference between glass filament fabric silanes and finish?
Glass filament fabrics are coated with a textile sizing during manufacture to protect the yarn during processing. This sizing consists of starch and oils and prevents adhesion between the fiber and the resin. To achieve good adhesion, the textile sizing is removed from the fabric and the fabric is then coated with a bonding agent (finish). The bonding agents are usually modified silanes that have been adapted to the matrix material. The processing properties of the fabrics, such as drapability and impregnation behavior, are significantly improved in a second finishing process. Silane sizing represents a compromise between textile sizing and finishing. The finish is more specialized and therefore has better properties. The textile finish is washed out and the fabric is treated with a bonding agent.
Finish is easier to impregnate and drape better. Finished fabrics are softer and more supple. During lamination, impregnation is better and the impregnation speed is significantly higher. The adhesion of the resin to the fabric is better, which increases the shear strength and tensile strength. This increases the service life of the laminate under load.
Conclusion: When laminating a simple container, I use silane (inexpensive), and for aircraft repairs and model making, I use finish.
Glass fiber mats for comparison
Textile glass mats for hand laminating are created by randomly layering cut glass filaments. They are bonded together using a binder that dissolves in the styrene of the polyester or vinyl ester resin, allowing the fibers to float freely in the resin.
